Week 2 (4.5) Sketch out ideas for the logo. Finalize the logo on the computer.

Week 3 (4.12) Sketch out ideas for packaging of the three necessary elements & apply logo to the elements. Get ideas on the computer.

Week 4 (4.19) Refine & finalize
Week 4 (4.19) Logo was finalized and began applying logo to packaging. Designed stickers and tea tags.

Week 5 (4.26) Held off on ideas of making an ad, i was still working on packaging designs.

Week 6 (5.3) Finalize whole packaging project and get everything printed off.
Week 6 (5.3) Printed off packaging for tea. Stickers and tea tags were finalized and tea bags were sewn.

Week 7 (5.10) Begin research for editorial design. Research bands and start writing out stories to go on the spreads.
Week 7 (5.10) Decided to stick with adding more elements to willow tea to show in my portfolio. Finalized packaging.

Week 8 (5.17) Finalize the stories so they can be used. Find pictures to work with design. Start putting it all together.
Week 8 (5.17) Spent this week taking photos for portfolio. Actually took a lot of time (using different backgrounds for photos and having to change the packaging for each picture because i only had one cardboard tube). I spent a lot of time here also going to several stores and looking for containers that I liked and I just liked the one I had to begin with. Started applying logo to other apps.

Week 9 (5.24) Continue working on spreads and get them finalized and printed off.
Week 9 (5.24) Finalized applying logo. Began working on stationary.

Week 11 (6.7) Added a advertisement for a flavor of willow tea.

I planned on doing one more project but, after I talked to several people about my portfolio they told me that I should work on willow and include several different elements to go along with the packaging. I never intended to design stationary or add more elements but, I am glad that I did. SO, I didn’t do everything that I set out to do but, I added more than I planned on. I think that my biggest challenge was getting the logo finalized, that’s what got me off track the most. (LOGO PROCESS IS SHOWN IN PDF).

I had a lot of fun working on the packaging once I got there. I have never done any packaging design before and it was a fun learning process. I learned a lot from what I thought looked good on the screen to actually printing it out and applying it to the package (i had to work with this quite a bit and this actually took up more time then i had planned on the schedule). I’m glad I spent more time on this though & even my logos, because looking at where they were and where they are now I HATED the first few versions and I am really happy with the final outcome.

At the start of the project I was excited to create a packaging design, having never done one before. I ended up enjoying it even more than I thought. I did get frustrated a lot along the way but, once I printed out the final design and applied it to the cardboard tube I was really happy with the way everything turned out. I thought that it gave off that organic feel that I was going for and I felt that having hand sewn the tea bags went well with that feeling. For a grade on this project I would give myself a B. I still would have liked to create some sort of editorial design and I’m sure that I would have been able to if the logo and designing of the package wouldn’t have taken up quite so much time on my schedule. I think that everything that I did for this project however turned out nicely and I put a lot of time and thought into it.

Here is a poster/advertisment I made to go along with everything. I attended it to just be like something you would see hanging in a coffee/tea store like starbucks.

i’ve changed the layout of the label that will be going on the cylinder. i’m much happier with the look and feel of this and think that the circlular label ties in with the other packaging that i have in mind. i still am working on this but, i just wanted to get some feedback that i can work off of when i get home from work.

i’m not quite on schedule right now. by this time i was hoping to have the package design all finalized but, i am still working with placing and sizing everything. i hoped to also have the tea bags sewn and the tags on the strings. i’m starting to think this may be the only project i get done. i hope not! but, this is something i want to put in my portfolio since i have no packaging in my portfolio. so i am really wanting to perfect this! i went to the fabric store and got ideas of the material i will be using and the string i will use to sew. i should probably do that once i have the logo finalized.. ooops!

here is where i am at on the packaging design as of now.

i am still working on the hierarchy of the elements and i need to find a different font. for the lid it will just be the logo and a smaller image of the vector. (it will go on that cylinder that i showed you, so this will be wrapping around it.

i really am going to try to get the design of this wrapped up by friday so i can begin focusing on the tags on the strings of teas and the little paper packaging that will hold the individual bags. i just want to jump ahead because i am excited about printing the stickers and sewing the bags!

working on putting the packaging together. now that i have printed it off and put it on the packaging i noticed a few type/spacing/color issues i will address. here is how it is looking so far. i feel like now that i got rid of the wood grain showing under the blue it is missing something. maybe some type of design element/pattern.

messing around with the circle. i tried making the leaf go around the outside and it just wasn’t looking right. i will mess with it more. need a break from the computer screen so i’ll post what i have sooo far!

back to willow tea

i have changed my mind back to working towards the direction willow tea was heading. after going to the store and looking at the current brands of tea out there they are all SO similar. all of them are really clean and appear to be targeted to a older age group. i will have more fun with it if i steer away from that. SO i have decided that I want my tea brand to target busy college students that don’t want to spend $5 or more on a cup of coffee a day to get energized when they can spend $5 on 30+ bags of tea. i want the packaging to be fun, bright:colorful & eye catching. something that really stands out next to all the other brands out there.

i’m not too far off of schedule. this week i am supposed to be sketching out packaging ideas and start getting them on the computer. i haven’t really sketched out the ideas yet but, i have many ideas in my head.

this is the direction i want to go with for the logo. i want more of the design to be pushed on the packaging. i think my problem before was i was making the logo too complex and i foresee that getting in the way of the packaging design. i really like this font, it reminds me of tree branches.

this is just to show the process of how my logo has gotten to where it is. i do like the direction that the tree is heading in but, not so much for the logo. maybe use it in someway to go with the packaging? idk just an idea. i think i will go with the logo in the circle and incorporate that throughout the packaging by: using circular bags for the tea, the tags will also be circular. for the tags i was also thinking of making a sticker on the back for people to take off with some interesting fact or inspirational quote. i also plan on sewing the actual bags of tea so if i go with that idea i think it would be fun to print stickers out as well.i really don’t want to get behind so even if the logo isn’t finalized i will still work on packaging ideas this week. who knows that may even help me in finalizing my logo…

i worked on sketching out possible ideas for logos for the tea brand. this is just a quick idea from paper to computer of possible ideas.

at first i wanted to try a logo with a handwritten/organic feel and then once i started working off the scan I quickly tossed the idea.. it feels like it would be a brand geared more towards children. this is what that idea was looking like..

with that idea set aside i wanted to make a nice simple, clean and feminine logo. this one still has some work, it is just a quick idea but, i really like the look and feel of it so far.for the name of the brand i wanted to tie it to nature and willow trees are my favorite tree so that’s where willow came from. then when i added the flower i figured a flower would be more appropriate for the name.

I still want to go with the magazine idea however, i have narrowed it down some…

If I had my choice I would love to do editorial design with the magazine NYLON. As of now I am going to design 2 spreads that would be similar to the work you would see in this magazine. I decided to do the spreads on my current favorite music artists.

I also think that it would be interesting to do some sort of packaging design since we haven’t done any of that in the program. I am leaning towards doing some sort of food packaging. I can say that probably 80% of the time I am persuaded on what to buy based on the package design. I am thinking of doing packaging for hot tea. There would be three elements to this design, the box that holds the individual bags of tea, the actually design of the paper enclosing the tea and then the tag that is attached to string of the tea. I will just come up with my own brand of tea for this. If I have time I would also like to make a ad for the brand of tea I come up with.

SO not that much is different but, I changed the grid slightly and made the text not so close to the center gutter (that line in the middle wont be there of course, just there to show that). i keep changing my mind between a sans serif and a serif for the main header and also not sure if i should make it a little bit bolder still? Is the yellow font a bit hard to read it some places? That last page I just added just for printed purposes. ummmm yahh.. i like where it is, i may try to find some different graphic element to add.. im worried that the font size may be a point to small, it’s 8pt right now for the body text.

i’m still working on the layout of the page below.. i’m not happy with where it is now.
